GCC, regarding cameras, the wind and sand/dust/humidity were ruining my good Canon cameras since I took them out on the beach with me during my patrols, so I bought a good quality point-and-shoot camera which I now use on patrols or any time I'm going to the beach.
Here is a link to the one I bought a few months ago, which is just a little over $300 right now through Amazon.com. It is a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ35-12MP, 18X optical zoom. My first "good" camera wasn't that strong!
