The Cross on Pensacola Beach

The large cross located on Pensacola Beach stands high atop a sand dune on Ft. Pickens Road. It is a memorial to the first Christian mass held by Spaniards in 1559 when Don Tristan de Luna y Arrelano, along with 1500 hopeful settlers and soldiers, made the first attempt to colonize Pensacola Bay.

"It is difficult to say what is impossible, for the dream of yesterday is the hope of today and the reality of tomorrow."

Hay D. J. I spent the first 19 years of my life growing old in Pensacola. I joing the USAF in 66 and left for good. I was home for bout 8 months and left for Arizona where I have been ever since. When people ask me where I like to go for relaxation, or vacation or just to get away from the world, it's Pensacola Florida.

It was a excellent place in the late 50's and early 60's to grow up. Can't tell you the number of times we camped on the beaches (Pensacola Beach, Gulf Beach, Ft. McCray, etc.) ran amuck at Ft Pickens, Barrankis, the Point, East Bay, Pensacola Bay, just a great place and time to grow.

Here last summer (2nd week in June) I took my two oldest grandaughters 10 & 7, My 18 year old step-daughter and spent a week of fun on the beaches. I think I got a new generation of Gills interested in my home town.

I would take my own kids to visit mom and dad back in the 70's and 80's. I still have two brothers, countless cozens and neices/nephews still living in the area.

Thanks for the updated pictures of the Beach - My wife has the web cam posted on her lap top.
