Clair - da loon

Meet Clair, da loon. I see several resting along the beach around dawn. It is not uncommon for a tourist or someone unfamilar with loons to report them as an injured bird. While graceful on water, their webbed feet are set far back on their body, making it difficult for them to walk or maneuver around on shore.

Apologies to Claude Debussy fans for my bad pun. If the rest of you are unfamiliar with or have forgotten the beauty of Clair de lune, the third movement of The Suite Bergamasque, you may want to check out one of the YouTube versions by clicking HERE.

And if you would like to hear some of the loon's soulful and unique calls, click HERE and listen to 'wail' or 'tremelo' - the typical calls I hear at Ft. Pickens.

Great photos. In December we go up to Squaw Creek game reserve in the Mound City, Missouri area for Eagle Days. Hundreds of Bald Eagles nest in the area. They are beautiful.

Thanks, David. I would LOVE to photograph eagles! I know we have some here on the island, but I've never seen them myself. Your trip to Missouri sounds wonderful!
