On my heart

"Thou'rt gone, the abyss of heaven
Hath swallowed up thy form; yet, on my heart
Deeply has sunk the lesson thou hast given,
And shall not soon depart."

~~ William Cullen Bryant (1794-1878, American poet)

This particular quote came from "To a Waterfowl", but one of my favorites poems by William Cullen Bryant is "Thanatopsis". Though sad, I find it absolutely amazing that he wrote it when he was only 17. The part which most touches me is the last 8 or 9 lines which he came back and added when he was perhaps 22 or 23. Here's a link to read it.

One wonders what his loss could have been when he was 17.

Loss does not become easier even though it is repeated many times in our lives, but words such as these do give comfort.

Thank you!
